World Youth Championships in Lille France

#1

am at the World Youth meet in Lille, France… if there is interest I will try and send a timely update during the events as I did last year during the World Juniors in Moncton, Canada…
Most agree that the track and stadium is among the most beautiful any of us have seen… truly a magnificent arena. The city of Lille is very pretty… many will also say that this group of 41 USA kids is not among our strongest… competition begins tomorrow and runs thru July 10.

I’d like it if you sent updates.

I haven’t looked very deep into the girls roster, but it is true that we didn’t send the strongest male team. Part of that is because most of our best high schoolers ended their season after NBN, and the World Youth trials and champs are much later. Even so, it says a lot that we can send a “weak” team and we will still probably grab a lot of medals, especially in the sprints and hurdles.

#4

Oh yes, please do update. I enjoyed the Moncton updates from last year.

one added little editorial comment I’d make is that the number of athletes we send compared to countries half our size and smaller is rather small… 40 kids from the USA? Many events we sent but one and there are events ( with qualifiers ) we’ve sent none… many kids who attended the trials in Myrtle Beach, who thought they were qualifiers, were not named to the squad… some disappointments there.
The only relay run at the WYC is the ‘Swedish’ relay ( 100-200-300-400)… where else is it run? The boys 110mh is 36" and the ladies is 30"! ( not 33"- and many think that 33" is way too low )
I guess that’s more than one editorial comment.

after 4 heats of the girls’ 100mh Trinity Wilson has the fastest qualifier 13.59 with a few others in the 13.72-5 range. These are 30" hurdles not the HS 33". Don’t ask why.
Cameron Burrell’s first LJ ( son of Leroy ) was a foul

#7

Kendall William up in the hurdles…after an average start, KW with the 2nd fastest time in the first round of 13.60 -1.4m/s
