Refreshed with spring 2016 times. Most noteworthy are the additions in the freshman and junior 3200 lists. We hardly mention Clark Otte on this forum yet he’s up there with some pretty good names in the junior list but overshadowed by the big three – Finn, Gus and Tannor. As far as freshman go, led by Drew Bosley there were four guys to make the lists.

#53

@stoutalumni – you might know. Is Dylan Wachter from New Richmond (on the sophomore 800 list) the son of former UW-Stout standout Jeff Wachter by chance? Dates and whereabouts (aka the north) line up.

#54

Both of Jeff Wachter’s sons attended Shakopee (MN) HS. Jeff’s youngest son, Karl (2016), ran the 800 somewhere around 1:56 or 1:57.

FWIW, their mother is Kathy Niedeberger from Verona, who was a pretty decent runner in her own right along with her siblings (Cheryl & Bill) and is still on Stout’s all-time lists from 800 meters through the 5000.

@zen other than the former 10k american record holder solinsky, the top 2 returning distance runners in state history will face each other with Gus not far behind and perhaps the best sophomore in state history (time will tell) also in the mix. Zens lists don’t lie. As fans we have a special year to enjoy although I expect that times will continue to get better due to social media spreading expectations across states (20 kids broke 15 minutes nationally just this past week alone) and all the top guys in every state read about these 14:32s and know they need to step up as well. I’m very excited to see the state meet Tannor/Finn showdown. it will be an amazing race.

#56

Don’t think so Jeff and his family live in Minnesota but his younger son does run cross country and track and is quite accomplished.

#57

@Goforthewin I went pretty deep in checking for freshman 800s but usually I worked backwards using top studs. But that means there could have been guys who were amazing early on but didnt continue. Can you think of anyone in the Milwaukee area 1970s - 2000s that would have broken 2 as a freshman? I think part of the issue – correct me if I am wrong – is 9th grade was in the junior high system for many school districts until reform swept through. Breaking 2 minutes while a frosh/soph is still a relatively new thing. For instance I dont think someone like Steve Lacy broke 2 until he was a junior. People like Ben Gregory and Steve Markson in the early 2000s were topped out at 2:02 as freshman. And as far as overall times, last year we had 24 kids run about 1:56.6 or better. In the 90s there were times we had only one or two do that per year.

#58

Karl Wachter graduated this past spring but you’re correct that he was an outstanding runner – if he’s anything like his dad, he’s a late bloomer and he’ll really blossom in college provided he continues with his career. I’ll have to ask Jeff what Karl’s intentions are.

#59

@Zen despite being at probably every state meet from 1979 to 1990 i dont think i have much value to your search but here is what i know. stud freshman candidates (guys I remember to be good when young) overall back in the day its true no one broke 2:10 in 8th grade or 2:00 in 9th including all the falls and Brookfield and wbay studs and sub 8 2 mile relay were rare but of course if at state plenty of teams would have approached 7:50. list: Phil downs if he ran would have broken 2 for sure. Castro and Rodriguez from oak creek maybe. later on David Schneider from oak creek was good young. I recall a kid from marinette be good young who never did much- I believe his name was Keith Dau but he may have been a stud frosh but probably more so a soph. the Milwaukee south (dorow, stewart, wells) and case (15 guys) record books should be scrubbed. Charleton hammer. I don’t think any of the Milwaukee north guys did it that young (oatis, moore, suttle) nor the Custer kid sam stotts. Pete Jaeger westby and Jason Wilkinson (boscobel) came onto the scene as sophomores I think not frosh. i believe john Hyland frosh pr was better than joe terry (baraboo) and mike raemisch (waunakee) from a conversation we all had together as terry and raemisch were total studs but not as freshman. I don’t think 1:56 was that rare in the 90s as your records show perhaps the action happened in dual meets and weather stunk sometimes at state. other than the kapheim/hacker/augostini early 80s races you are right the 800 has gotten much better overall in this state (maybe due to social media, weather, 4x800 a state event) despite this past year’s disappointing winning times as last year’s champions would have had to run better to win in most years from 1975 to 1990 although that’s partly due to tannor Wagner false start as I thought he was ready to run 152/153 which is great for a junior and your berlin stud seemed to be a bit off at state barely winning a slow race by a hair.

I talked to Al Rodriguez about three years ago and that’s where I got 1) Bob Nuernberg and 2) Paul Soto. After fact checking our discussion it turns out his memory is pretty spot on. I ended up locating both of those names with the times he stated. I did check out the Milwaukee South & North guys but there just isn’t enough information from regular season meets only the conference top 3. Those were some epic squads. We are safe with Pete Jaeger and Wilkinson. Pete Jaeger and I changed the Boscobel school record board by bringing to their attention that Wilkinson never ran 4:15 which is what they had him listed it. Pete belongs to tracktalk. I looked for Raemisch and Joe Terry as freshman but did not find anything on them. Just off the 800 and 1600 freshman lists is Kjell Kaashagen of Cambridge. Guaranteed @westharrier remembers him. He was a 2:02/4:33/~10:00 freshman who did not get better. I think he has kids that just recently went through Cambridge HS. I did look for Charlton Hamer but he was a 400m convert if I remember correctly, kind of like Winzenried. I did not locate any dual meet times for Phil Downs in the 800 though I agree – 4:20/9:18 puts you right in that mix.

What I will look for:

  • Sam Stotts
  • Keith Dau
  • Dave Schneider
  • Castro

Thank you.

There was a freshman boy from McFarland back in the mid to late 60’s that I know broke 2:00 for the old 880 yard. I am thinking 1:57 for him. He won state I believe at least once and maybe twice. The name slips me now but Bruce Fisher may have it on a top ten list of some kind. Very strong kid built like Raemisch and I know he would make your top frosh list and probably sophomore list as well.

@zen what a list of studs. the young 800 studs have been a surprising phenomenon since 2000. I think it’s social media and club running as the 800 used to be an upperclassmen event where eric brown and liam belson may have had interval training in 8th grade outside of middle school. if mstc moves its athletes up to the 800 younger than more guys would have broken 2 as freshman. although coach sims loved the 800 I believe back in the day it was just an upperclassmen race for him as I ran on his only 4x800 squad as a junior with 3 other juniors from north division and south division. that team had amazing sprinters (brian jones norris williams). amazing and legendary assistant coaches (brown/hackett/oglesby/heard). Eric brown dad I believe ran the 200 that summer I don’t think he could make the first team 4x400 given the talent was nuts although I may be wrong as he was a 49 flat guy which was ok. our 4x800 squad won a nationals meet I recall not sure the time but probably 7:40s mid. it wasn’t tac nationals which I ran individually. fun factoid: I did drag Jason wilkinson off the farm for 1 meet to train at north division high and race with us once. one of our 4 guys from south division hurt himself and we needed a last minute replacement for a random meet. Jason had 4:11 talent in highschool although he found other interests as a senior. seperately mccusker and ballistreri were good when young. I think Sean didn’t have leg speed til his junior year but pat was strong and fast as a youngster. he is a sub 2 candidate check. but phil downs was just an amazing freshman from 1975 to 1990 and given he was probably only a 158/159 frosh if he ran, given that I doubt I missed any given I knew every runner and race from 1979 to 1990 as a fan and runner. Sam Stotts father whom was a friend of mine told me Sam ran a great 800. I know Sam only as a 48 second quartermiler (possibly a state champ) but given that conversation I had with his father (who was a pastor and philanthropist) its worth checking to see if Sam did an 800 earlier on.

I have not only state meet results going back to 1948 - 1990 on a different computer but honor rolls and the like. Probably about 500 PDFs and images. I’ll check those tonight and some Saturday or Sunday afternoon in the future I’ll upload them to another state meet archive thread.

This is what we had last spring. I think my era would have had cut-offs like 2:13/4:59/10:36 and obviously much more spread out. If you were a 4:45 freshman that was pretty rare – which it still is and shows major signs of raw talent – but just look at the numbers. At least 24 kids were under 4:46 and six freshman broke 10. The 800 is packed too. Not so rare anymore.

johnny bartishevich ran 4:31 as a freshman at greenfield just off your lists and i know he ran very fast as a sophmore too in multiple events (beating rodriguez). I have Andy Bosley official winning times from north shore conference his freshman year. 1600 meter in 4:32.5 where he placed 2nd by 3 seconds (he had no leg speed as a freshman) he won the 3200 in 9:44.09 (won by 1 second) which I believe is 2 seconds faster than you have on your lists. all the times go to the 100th of a second so I think it’s computer timed vs hand

I went off of Andy Edington’s old website. Yours sounds better and more exact. A Bosley’s .xx was another placeholder. There are no other placeholders in these lists except for both Bosley’s.

To kick start the morning I digitally thumbed through the May 31st, 1966 Janesville Daily Gazette – Tuesday edition.

Page 17 with the Class A and partial Class B summaries:

Blown up portion of Page 18 with the remaining Class B and Class C summaries:

Craig Swenson of McFarland was the Class C state champion at 880 yards in 1966 (2:01.3), 1968 (1:56.8) and 1969 (1:57.7). I believe this is the guy @westharrier was referring to and his freshman time converts from 2:01.3 for 880 yards to 2:00.6y for 800 meters. That puts him at current position #20 on our freshman lists. Below is a picture of him during his junior year in 1968. He was also a running back / half back in football.

Here is his feature article from the May 24th Wisconsin State Journal in 1966 covering his freshman year success. I believe this was written after he won the Madison Suburban Conference championships in the 880 the week before:

Great stuff Zen. Yep that’s the kid. In looking at this I wonder whether he is in the track HOF. Three state titles in four years. That is certainly worthy stuff. What do you think. Back then breaking 2 minutes in the half was pretty big stuff. More guys did three sports and didn’t run in the winter. Sub 2 is still an excellent standard but now you have more 400 guys moving up and guys running on a track or Petit center all winter. For track give me the guys who are out cross country skiing and building up the engine and overall body strength to run through a brick wall.

I dont know who is in the hall of fame and who isn’t in the hall of fame. But I’ve heard of many instances (i.e. John Bowen) where if you weren’t accepted socially by a certain tier of coaches you may never see the hall of fame. Craig Swenson seems pretty hall of fame to me. Definitely one of the first freshman phenoms and save for another find, that time was the freshman record until the Oak Creek guys came through.

I looked really closely at all the 70s 880 studs ( Dave Malley, the other guy from Neenah, etc.) and 1:57y or slower was a majority of these guys’ PRs through junior year. Even Joe Kapheim in the early 80s went from about a 1:57-1:58 to 1:51 from junior to senior year.

I’ve also pegged a question to the 1948-1966 period - when did cross country and track become a year round focus for athletes? When did it become more than an extracurricular activity and rather a chosen lifestyle? Many times there were guys like Winzenreid and Lacy who were three sport athletes and maybe cross country was mandated by the basketball coach. Only to inadvertently find out that running was their niche. I’ve definitely heard a handful of 60s/70s Marquette basketball players say, “boy was cross country tough - our coach made us go out to get us in shape for basketball” – almost as if running was a punishment.

I think John Bowen is already in the track HOF. If not there is something wrong there. One thing I remember coaches complaining about him was basically he had a Milwaukee All star team that all ended up at South but I am not sure there was even school choice back then. There may be nothing to that tale but it was out there years ago. What ever they were marvelous teams back in the mid 80’s. Back in the late 50’s and early 60’s when I ran CC we had numerous wrestlers and basketball players on our team getting in shape for their winter sport. Some of them turned out to be really tough cross country runners. We had a 165 pound state wrestling champ on our top five in about 59. In the age of specialization we seldom see that any more. I also remember that our “long run” was 3 miles and that some of the guys who were really good actually ran in the summer on their own. Personally on school choice I do not think someone living in another district should be able to compete for a school in another district unless it is a private school. If they want to go there for academic reasons only fine but when sports is the motive?
