Hs boys 3200m

#1

What will be the top time from a Wisconsin boy this year?

ADDITION: List of returnees courtesy of MadwestCC a few posts down.

#2

We lost a pretty strong senior class and with the way the D1 race went out last year I really do not think that we will see anybody under 9:10. Now I think it was the Monona Grove Invite where McKenna showed that he can be a force! The question is what runners are capable of running under 9:10?
I can think of a pretty good list. Zen is your poll for the entire season or just the State Meet?

#3

entire season

#4

how about top 6 for 3200m this year?? any guesses

#5

Schubert, Hacker, Meister (if he runs it), Penzenstadler (if he runs it), Robbie McDonald, Sandvold

I think these guys have the capabilities to run 9:0x if they set a good pace. Schubert looked to good at the end of the Cross Country season to bet against him. He ran roughly the same time as Elliot Krause on parkside, and Elliot ran 9:09 that spring. Meister, Hacker, and Penz are all coming off very good cross country seasons, and all posses the talent to run under 9:10.

Anyone else excited for track?

#6

Definitely! There are going to be quite a few match-ups between Schubert and Penzenstadler this year (as usual) and if they get a nice day at Titan Stadium I can definitely see them pushing each other to some very nice times.

#7

Zen do you have anytimes from last year of the top returners in the 3200m for the whole year not just state?

#8

unfortunately not…

D3-Jack taylor or D.T.

#16

Based on those times there is no way they go much faster than 9:10. Whoever voted sub 9 is totally ridiculous. You guys really think some of these guys are gonna improve by 30 seconds?

#17

These guys improved quite a bit from their junior:

Gabe Heck (45s)
Matt McKenna (38s)
Jake Erschen (49s)

Won’t always happen like that but sometimes the fine tuning of an athlete leads to spectacular results. Jogging through my memory, I recall one of the most significant time drops coming from West Chicago’s Tim Keller. He ran 9:39 as a junior and then 8:52 as a senior. Keller went on to run at Wisconsin where he stunned his dorm floor RA through a door handle. (random but true)

#18

Yes, exceptions do happen. But to think that any 9:25-9:40 2 miler is going to break 9 is a total shot in the dark. Just wondering, but those three guys what were their times from Junior to Senior?

#19

McKenna:
2009 1600m: 4:27
2009 3200m: 9:46
2010 1600m: 4:12
2010 3200m: 9:08

Erschen:
2009 1600m: 4:26
2009 3200m: 9:49
2010 1600m: 4:13
2010 3200m: 9:01

Heck:
2009 1600m: 4:22
2009 3200m: 9:45h
2010 1600m: 4:16
2010 3200m: 9:01

1600m thought: If Gabe Heck had opted to run the Wisco Mile or raced the mile at the Distance Gala, I believe he would have recorded a 4:12-13. He instead chose to focus on the Distance Gala 2mile where he competed well.

#20

BTW I didn’t vote for 8:59, I voted for 9:04.

However, I look at the distinguished individuals from cross country and see a group that could develop at similar rates to last year’s bunch.

Just glancing at the sophomore track times from the current D1 junior class I tend to lean toward something in the low-9s this year. Tommy, Zach and Russ specifically. With respect to Cichacki (4:23), Selner (4:26), Staven (9:38), Jandal (4:26) and the many others in Wisconsin who ran exceptional times as 10th graders, the first three mentioned have demonstrated their versatility as 1600m - 5000m runners. All stood on the podium in cross country.

Now does that mean I think all three will go on to run 9:00 this year? No. Two might not even run the 3200m at all but Russ Sandvold will. I honestly think he is worth a 9:10-9:15 this year if he continues to improve and I can almost guarantee he will be trying for the 3200m title. He’s one I see as being able to run a quicker time. I also think Tommy and Zach would be comfortable racing at 4:40 pace. Both also bring top notch 1600m speed.

That’s just the junior class.

Once you start dissecting the D1 3200m field and pass the senior names around in convo the field starts looking pretty darn loaded:

Dan Schubert
Sam Hacker
Sam Penzenstadler
Josiah Swanson
Robbie McDonald (not a great state meet in cross)
Nathan Routhier
Tim Trapp
Aaron Derner

That list is not double checked.

Then D2! I think something around 9:25 and possibly faster will win state. We don’t have a Luterbach returning and we won’t know who this year’s Matt Mckenna is until late May but we do have 4 insanely talented sophomores who stepped up in cross country. Not everyone runs in the 4:20s or 9:40s as freshman. Who knows what this group will accomplish by 2013. Just look at Mike C of Aquinas… the kid was a twig when he ran 4:26. No offense Mike, most freshman are.

D3? Rumors have shot around that DT split something serious in the Lourdes 4x8 at state and he also has 4:19y speed. That could play out well in a fresh 3200m. Jack is Jack and he’ll perform.

And what about Josh Mirth? I wonder what meets he has lined up for the spring. He’s another superior talent. People don’t just go to NXN and Footlocker and run in the 15:30s without doing something relatively fast in track.
